NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference announced Davidson redshirt sophomore Elle Sutphin as the league’s Player of the Week while George Washington freshman Maxine Engel garnered her first-ever Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were announced Monday following the conclusion of the seventh week of contests played Dec. 20-26.
Sutphin, a forward out of Pilot Mountain, N.C., guided the Wildcats solidly back into the win column as Davidson racked up a pair of road victories over in-state adversaries Western Carolina and Charlotte. The forward registered 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds in a dominant win against the Catamounts on Monday before scoring a team-best 20 points with five boards during Wednesday afternoon’s victory over the 49ers. For the week, Sutphin averaged 17.0 points on a 63.2 (12-of-19) shooting performance from the field along with a perfect 10-of-10 showing at the charity stripe, tacking on 6.5 boards and 2.0 assists per contest across the two-game stretch as well.
A product of Memphis, Tenn., Engel opened up her collegiate career with a memorable performance in George Washington’s pre-Holiday clash against Lehigh on Tuesday, logging 21 minutes with eight points and one block against the Mountain Hawks. Earning her collegiate debut due to a short bench, the freshman forward closed out the game shooting a balanced 50 percent (4-of-8) from the floor to help GW consistently keep Lehigh within striking distance throughout the matchup.
