ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship began on Thursday at the USTA National Campus with two matches. The fourth-seeded Rhode Island Rams faced the thirteenth-seeded St. Bonaventure Bonnies, and the fifth-seeded VCU Rams met twelfth-seeded Saint Louis Billikens in the first two matches.
Match #1: No. 4 Rhode Island def. No. 13 St. Bonaventure 4-0
The fourth-seeded Rhode Island Rams advanced to the A-10 Women’s Tennis Quarterfinals with its 4-0 victory against No. 13 St. Bonaventure. In doubles, St. Bonaventure had a walkover on court three. Then Nikki Fernando and Katharina Spieth of Rhode Island defeated the Bonnies’ Isabella Venter and Sienna Smith 6-3 for the doubles point. In singles, the Bonnies had a walkover on court six. Spieth captured a win at No. 1 singles over Venter 6-1, 6-3. Fernando won on court three against Bote 6-3, 6-1 to seal the victory. Rhode Island will face No. 5 VCU on Friday at 9 a.m. in the quarterfinals.

The fifth-seeded VCU Rams defeated twelfth-seeded Saint Louis Billikens 4-0 in the first round of the A-10 Women’s Tennis Championship. VCU will meet No. 4 Rhode Island at 9 a.m. in the A-10 quarterfinals. In doubles, Andrea Magallanes and Yelizaveta Karlova of VCU won 6-0 against the Billikens Lizzie Barlow and Elizabeth Choate on court three. Then Madison Hill and Aryn Walker of SLU defeated VCU’s Lea Malazdra and Sofia Jane Thorne 6-2 on court two. The Rams collected the doubles point with a victory on court one by Mariam Ibrahim and Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando. In singles, Karlova defeated Walker 6-0, 6-2 on court five. Then Andrada Sabando won 6-1, 6-3 over Hill at No. 2 singles. At No. 1 singles, VCU’s Sofia Jane Thorne defeated SLU’s Emmerson White 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 for the victory.
